Saving 15% on Restaurant's Labor Costs with Schedex
I've transformed Schedex from a 2006 app to a modern product within just 3 months. As their lead designer, I took all the design initiatives and provided guidance on UX best practices and innovative solutions.
Chapter 1: The Origins
Five years ago in Beirut, former restaurant employee Avo Manjerian identified significant inefficiencies in shift scheduling and employee management systems. Motivated by this realization, he developed Schedex two years later—a platform designed to simplify staffing processes and enhance operational efficiency.
Chapter 2: The Problem
In the vibrant center of Batroun, Butlers Beach Club stands out as a culinary retreat. However, like many in Lebanon's restaurant industry, it faced challenges in managing labor costs. Schedex was introduced to address these issues, helping Butlers Beach Club and numerous other establishments reduce their labor costs while streamlining employee management.
Chapter 3: The Impact
Schedex transformed the chaotic nature of scheduling reducing labor costs by 15% at Butlers Beach Club and various other restaurants.
Chapter 4: Design Crisis
Avo embarked on this venture with several tech partners, taking on multiple roles including that of a product designer. He responded to a growing number of client requests for more sophisticated features, which initially made Schedex a complex and daunting platform. This complexity necessitated a steep learning curve and comprehensive training. This is what the platform looked like before I intervened.
Chapter 5: The Wizard
This is where I entered the picture. Schedex referred to me as a "design wizard”. Our introduction came via Wael Khattar, founder of Anachron Tech, who had previously worked with me. To move fast, I used UntitledUI as a base for Schedex's design system.
Chapter 6: Simplifying Schedex
The initial volunteer work led to more significant involvement. I undertook a comprehensive redesign of the platform with my colleagues Frederic Saddi, modernized the branding with one of the best graphic designer Obi Noshie, and developed a dynamic new landing page on Framer filled with engaging elements. This transformation was aimed at enhancing user interaction and aesthetic appeal.
Chapter 7: Why?
The necessity to simplify the user experience became evident as we aimed to enable users to operate the platform independently without needing direct training from Schedex. This efficiency was crucial in saving time for both Avo and the managers. Avo even traveled to Singapore to onboard new clients!
Chapter 8: And they lived happily ever after…
The efforts to streamline and enhance Schedex paid off. Restaurants across Lebanon, Cyprus, Singapore, and beyond reported significant improvements in managing their labor costs and staff scheduling. The user-friendly design of the platform allowed managers to adopt Schedex with minimal training, leading to widespread user satisfaction and operational efficiency. The success story of Schedex continued to inspire similar ventures, proving that thoughtful design and user-centric innovation can transform industry challenges into opportunities for growth.
